Understanding environmental attitudes has recently become significant and, therefore it is equally important to be able to measure those attitudes. I think that Children's Environmental Attitudes & Social Knowledge Scale (CHEAKS) assessment tool, which measures children's global attitudes and knowledge about environmental issues, can help science teachers to develop responsibility and knowledge regarding environmental issues among their students. This tool will enable teachers to encourage students to think about and/or reconsider their environmental attitudes. I also believe that the tool might even subconsciously make the students more positively active concerning environmental issues.
Both the 5-point-scale items (addressing attitude) and the multiple-choice questions (addressing knowledge) seem very interesting, and if I were a science teacher, I would definitely be very curious not only to evaluate the knowledge of my students concerning environmental issues through this tool, but also what the students’ attitudes are on these issues. Based on those attitudes, a teacher may further decide what type of activities to employ in class in order to develop more sympathetic environmental attitudes in the classroom.
